MuzicNotez: First off, it’s an honor to be doing this interview with you David, thanks for taking the time to sit down with us.
What motivated you to start creating music? What age did you begin?
David Justin: My dad played the electric guitar since he was a child, but I specifically remember learning how to play the violin and drums when I was a kid. I had always had a passion for songwriting, but it wasn’t until I was 17 that I got serious and picked up the guitar to use as an outlet to express my songs.
MuzicNotez: Who were your musical influences, idols, or bands growing up that have helped mold you into the musician you are today? Or helped mold the music that you create?
David Justin: I listened to all genres of music from Rock, Gospel, Pop, Country and Classical. The list would be too long, but I pretty much admired any artist or band who can write and play.
MuzicNotez: What’s the ultimate goal you want your music to achieve, or for you to achieve in your career as a musician? Any particular message you wish to send?
David Justin: My ultimate goal is to be able to do something I love and share my music with the world. Music brings people together globally. I’ve never met someone who hates music and if they do I’d like to be the first to know.
MuzicNotez: What’s the greatest concert you’ve ever been to or performed?
I’ve been to some great festivals which are cool because you get to see & hear all types of genres and artist, but most memorable was when I was a kid I saw a local band which made me want to be a professional artist.
MuzicNotez: Your new hit ‘SUPERNOVA’ is receiving a ton of success. Most notably it is airing live on VEVO, rotating to over 4 million listeners on Sky Rock FM in France, 3,000+ spins on U.S. top 40 internet radio stations and currently spinning on BBC 1 UK. How does it feel to be so rewarded and to have so much success for Supernova? Did you expect this kind of reception?
David Justin: I am very humbled by “Supernova’s” success and how much God has blessed me. I’m still independent and I never thought that an independent artist would be able to compete on a platform alongside major artist. For the past 2 1/2 years my manager and I wrote out a plan and we’ve stuck to it! Like any plan we’ve had some setbacks along the road, but it feels so good to finally see hard work paying off. I hope this inspires other independents out there to know that if I can do it so can they!
MuzicNotez: The song was co-written & produced by Mark Grilliot, how did you hook up with him? How was that experience creating the song with him?
David Justin: My manager reached out to Mark Grilliot and thankfully he agreed to work with me. Anytime I work with a new songwriter for the first time its like being on a blind date. As songwriters you figure out what each other likes, dislikes and your styles which sometimes don’t always work. We both had the same vision for the direction of “Supernova and were ecstatic how the song turned out. He’s very passionate about what he does and so am I. I think that combination is always a good recipe for a great song.
MuzicNotez: What was the inspiration for Supernova? What does the song mean to you?
David Justin: 30 minutes into meeting Mark I was telling him about how much I’ve sacrificed and given up chasing my dreams. Over the past week I had this idea of using the word “Supernova” as a song idea, but was unsure about what direction to take with it. We looked up the definition of the word “Supernova” and I instantly saw the comparisons in my life. In order for a Supernova to occur stars have to collide and die off and in return emit a bright light known as a Supernova. The stars colliding and dying off represents my sacrifices while the Supernova represents my dream of being a successful artist. I remember writing and singing the first line of the chorus “Supernova in the sky, please don’t pass me by, I can see your light coming through me tonight.” Mark and I just kind of looked at each other with a grin and knew this was going to be a hit.
MuzicNotez: What else are you working on? What can we expect to see and hear from you in the future?
David Justin: As always I never stop writing and recording. Most likely you will see me on tour in the near future.
MuzicNotez: Anything else you wish to say about yourself or your music? Any message for your fans?
David Justin: I’m so grateful to my fans and supporters who continuously encourage me along the way. Without them I wouldn’t be able to do what I love and that is music!
