  What I'm All About
  • Current Status:  This week's soundtrack to my life: Atoms For Peace - AMOK; smashing!!
  • Artist Name:  Rae Kelly
  • Genre:  Alternative
  • About & History:  Rae is a 24 year old, Dublin-born singer/songwriter. Her charming blend of catchy pop, sultry jazz and thought-provoking lyrics endear her to audiences. Writing from the early age of 10, she performed mostly as part of a church choir group and in a covers band until reaching the final of the 2FM National Song Writing Contest at the age of 17, performing her original material publically for the first time to an audience in Vicar Street, Dublin.

Despite kick-starting her career in one of the finest venues in Dublin and being offered slots in other reputable venues in the area (such as Crawdaddy, Whelans and Bewley’s Theatre Café), Rae suffered from a crippling stage fright that led her to perform quite sporadically. After completing a degree in Music Technology in NUI Maynooth, she moved to St Albans in 2009 to obtain an MSc in Music Composition for Film and Media in The University of Hertfordshire.

The move to St. Albans proved integral to Rae’s development as a performer. The wealth of singer/songwriters, musicians, venues and supportive local ears in the area led her to cultivate the confidence to gig frequently in Hertfordshire and subsequently venture out to London to play venues such as Proud Camden, Water Rats and The Imperial College London.

Since overcoming her anxieties Rae has played support to Rox and Lauren Pritchard, reached the final of St Albans’ ‘Music City Live and Unsigned’2012, culminating in a gig in the Alban Arena last March, had an interview on BBC Introducing and over the summer was invited to play at the ZMF Festival in Freiburg, Germany in July (which also featured performances from artists such as Janelle Monae and Patti Smith) where she played a 90 minute set of original material to a large, attentive audience. Rae most recently played in the Elgiva Theatre, Chesham to support Tinlin, a band which has just released their first album and is currently on tour with Paul Carrack.
