Fittingly released through a label called Heroic Records, ‘Frettening Behaviour’ is the new album from highly influential country rock guitarist Albert Lee and his band Hogan’s Heroes. Now several decades into a highly respected career, Lee is still going strong, as evidenced by this excellent 14 song collection.
Perhaps at its strongest when the pace is up, it’s an album that mixes all the country tropes with what you’d expect of a group of veteran roots musicians. There are elements of old fashioned rock ‘n’ roll (‘Looks Like Love’) , harmony driven choruses (‘Spellbound’), Jonny Cash-esque driving songs (‘When Elvis Broke the News’), good old fashioned slide guitar hoe downs (‘Showdown’) and of course country balladeering (‘The King of Broken Hearts’). There’s even a decent country version of Greenday’s excellent rock tune ‘Time of You Life’.
What they all have in common is a charm that’s hard to capture without years in the business and the superb guitar playing that made Albert Lee one of the premier names in the business. And on this evidence, long may it continue.
